Character Name: Hamato Raphael
Fandom: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Character History:
In the beginning there was ooze... no really, that is where it all began, the ooze, four baby turtles that were accidentally dropped down a sewer drain and a rat. The four baby turtles had ended up coated in the ooze, and the rat who rescued them ended up coated in it as well. When the ooze began to work on them, mutating their bodies and mental functions the rat decided to raise the four turtles as his sons. They became a family in this way, the father, Splinter, naming each son after a famous renaissance artist, Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael.
Raphael was 15 when their home for the same number of years was destroyed by a bunch of mechanical menaces called mousers. This forced brothers up to the surface, where they began getting involved with fighting against forces like the Purple Dragons and the Foot clan. They also met friends such as April O’neil, who they saved from the mousers, and Casey Jones who Raphael personally befriended while attempting to help keep the vigilante from doing something he could never undo. Raphael and Casey formed a strong and fast friendship, bonding over their mutual struggles with controlling their anger.
During this they make enemies of people such as Baxter Stockman, the inventor of the mousers and April’s one-time boss; Hun, the leader of the Purple Dragons; and Oroku Saki, who is less known as the Shredder, the leader of the foot clan. It is the last that poses the greatest threat to them, even at one point potentially turning Leonardo to his own devious purposes, and subsequently against his family. It is Raphael’s ability to find Leonardo’s triggers that get the eldest to fight with him, challenging him about a sword given to him by Oroku Saki as a gift. It’s only when Leonardo thinks he has thrown Raphael from the rooftop that he realizes the poison such an item was working in their life, fortunately Raphael had caught himself against the building side with his sai.
It is after this that the brothers, as well as Splinter fight against the Shredder, overcoming odds and ending up sending the shredder down to what they expect is his doom under a watertower. It is during these events that Leonardo makes contact with a mysterious group known as the Guardians. While they think that the Shredder is gone for good the brothers stumble across a group of mutants that had been created on the Shredder’s orders to be ideal for excavating underground in search of items he has use for. Of these mutants only three still have their mental capacities, who become friends to the turtles, the others reduced to monsters. In order to help their friends the group goes deep underground to find a certain type of crystal, which provides a source of protection for the mutants. Here they find a long lost city, where in they meet the last survivor of a race, who hopes to fix the mutants and have them stay with him, as people of his city. When the brothers decline he becomes irrational and they eventually have to trap him in a device he himself had been trapping the others in. While he had managed to cure the mutants and return them to their human states this only lasted so long as they stayed within the light of a crystal moon, which existed only in the cave.
Leaving their friends behind in the underground city the brothers returned home, where upon their lair is found by the Shredder and the family is forced to flee, ending up hiding at April’s shop and home. Still the Shredder pursued them and destroyed the place, thinking that inside were the brothers, their father Splinter and their friends Casey and April. Under the cover of being assumed dead the group fled north to Massachusetts to stay at Casey’s grandmother’s house. Here they all recovered from deep wounds suffered from their loss, the worst being Leonardo, who had been close to death. It was here that Raphael stood by his brother the most, helping him to recover not by coddling but by ever present support.
The group returns to New York around the beginning of spring and without hesitation they head to take out the Shredder, taking advantage of their status as ‘dead’ in the Foot’s records. In the fight they are successful in taking out the Shredder, beheading him in what they are certain is the final strike. But in the course of the battle Splinter is gravely injured, and when the brothers go to find him he is missing. They search hard for their father, but the slow work and lack of success starts to eat at Raphael, at one point he goes out alone, meeting a boy in the process who needs help, as his mother has been kidnapped by a crime group. Raph ended up blinded for a short time and still, with the boy’s help, managed to help him get his mother out and safely to the police.
After this the brothers get a suspicion that the guardians had Splinter and though contacting one of them, and tracing him back to his location they find that where the need to go is TCRI. The manage to break in through some harrowing feats and indeed find Splinter, but they are unable to retrieve him and are unaware that he is not being held captive but being treated and is a guest. In their attempt to avoid capture themselves they end up on a transmat device, a machine which transmits them through space to a far off universe, where they meet and save a being known as the Fugitoid, or Professor Honeycutt, it is through him that they learn they are lightyears from home, but he has the plans for a device that will return them home. They proceed to fight against and protect Professor Honeycutt from both the Federation and the Triceraton armies.
Unfortunately they are unable to win forever and are captured by the Triceratons who throw them first into prison, and then, when they prove to be challenging to keep contained, to a place ominously known as The Games. It turns out these games are a form of gladiatorial games, with lives at the price for losing a battle. It is here they meet a Triceraton who has been taken prisoner by his own, named Traximus; after their camaraderie and honor reignite the more seasoned gladiators own sense of honor he stands beside them against the leader of the Triceratons, Zanramon. Some narrow moments lead them to escaping both the Triceratons and the oncoming Federation, and they just barely manage to finish the transmat device that is going to get them home. But it fails. Suddenly, when they are nearly about to be killed, a transmat device brings them home, along with two three-man squads, one Triceraton and the other Federation. The Utrom, the race who own and have been working in TCRI, send most of these back, none of them noticing as one of the Triceratons goes missing.
It is after this that the brothers learn of the truth about the Utrom, and even the origin of the person they have been fighting, the Shredder. It turns out that the Utrom had been transporting a vicious criminal, Ch’rell, back to their home planet, and were nearing earth when the criminal escaped and forced them to crash in to feudal Japan. It was there that they learned to make mechanical disguises to interact with humans and allowed a trusted few to know their truth, the beginnings of the Guardians. But Ch’rell was still a threat, he took one of the Utrom made disguises and set himself up as Oroku Saki, also know as the Shredder. Over time the Utrom tried to build a transmat device to send them home, moving to New York and bringing with them a guardian name Hamato Yoshi, who brought along a pet rat he named Splinter.
This was the very same Splinter that was the turtles father, though he became homeless when the Shredder found Hamato Yoshi and killed him. It was not long after this that the canister of ooze shattered and coated the four baby turtles, a canister that came from TCRI, and was a by-product of their attempts to create a transmat device. It was as they finished learning all of this that the Shredder himself attacked the TCRI building, attempting to seek revenge on the Utroms. In the resultant fight the Utroms were able to get their transmat device targeted right on their home and fled, the Shredder making a mistake and getting blown up, to the best of their knowledge, along with the building, something that the brother’s barely survived.
Now that the Shredder was gone the brothers take some downtime to just live again, though the manage to make a new friend In Leatherhead, as well as returning to the underground city where they manage to bring a cure to their friends, allowing them to return to the surface world as humans for the first time in a long while.
As it turns out the presence of the Shredder had kept a number of criminal elements quiet and underwraps, and without him chaos starts to bloom in New York. It is in the midst of this that woman named Karai arrives in New York and manages to get to the turtles, it turns out she is the adopted daughter of Oroku Saki and she wants to revive the image of the Shredder, to put the city back as it was, which is beneficial for her as much as it is for the turtles. The turtles are reluctant to trust her but agree for the sake of the city, and in the end the combined efforts are successful, returning the crime rate to a more reasonable level for the city.
But things were not as they appeared and after a short time Ch’rell, the original Shredder himself, returned, having been found and aided by his daughter Karai to survive after the destruction of the TCRI building. Despite Karai having made a truce with the turtles he decides he wants the turtles dead and will hear nothing against this. This puts Karai at odds with her honor and duty.
Despite this the brothers follow Splinter when he leaves them, ending up accidentally entering into a transdimensional tournament, The Battle Nexus. It is here that they run into an old friend, Traximus, make new friends, like Miyamoto Usagi, and run into some old enemies, the Ultimate Ninja, whom Leonardo had defeated in battle once before, and Draco, a warrior who had lost to Splinter in the past. During the tournament Michelangelo and Raphael faced off against one another, and through Michelangelo’s taunting he is able to defeat Raphael, who bemoans his loss to his own brother, lamenting that he will never hear the end of it.
Traximus, who had been taken out previously, comforts his friend and offers to share a drink with him, as they drink it is revealed that Splinter had been framed as an attempted assassin against the Daimyo of the Battle Nexus. Raphael is offered assistance by Traximus to help free his father, and accepts it, the two working well in tandem to reach the prison cells and set Splinter free. All ends for the better as the Daimyo is recovered and Splinter’s name is cleared, Michelangelo even wins the tournament, much to Raphael’s chagrin, but in the process Draco and the Ultimate Ninja, the Daimyo’s own son, who had conspired to be rid of the Daimyo were lost to a tear in the dimensions.
Once returned home the Turtles learned that the Triceratons had traced the signal from the transmat device to Earth and were soon invading the planet, looking for Professor Honeycutt, who had left long ago with the Utrom, during their escape. It proves to be a long and hard fight for the Turtles, though they do meet up with Traximus once more who is a leader of a rebellion, and just when they convince the Triceratons that Professor Honeycutt is not on Earth and they leave, the professor himself returns to earth. This brings the Triceratons back, madder than ever, and during this the Federation arrives as well. It is at this point that Professor Honeycutt manages to upload a virus that disables all of the electronics for both forces, which provides Traximus the opportunity to stage his overthrow. With the longstanding war between the Triceraton and the Federation finally behind them both forces leave Earth in peace.
The family hosts a Christmas party, inviting many friends both from the city and from other dimensions, though it seems nearly spoiled as Mikey takes forever to come home, but when he does he gives them an opportunity to share their celebration with others and the family as well as their guests spend the holiday handing out toys to a local orphanage and truly relishing in the spirit of the holiday.
It’s after this happy time that everything goes downhill, for no known reason Donatello suddenly disappears, never returning or showing any sign of trying. Without the level headed brother among them, things start to slip in the family. Tragedy strikes two years later when the family is attacked, Splinter sacrificing his own life to get his sons out of harms way. This is something that becomes a thorn in Raphael’s side, as he feels that they could have saved him, but Leonardo had ordered them out, and he isn’t too proud to tell Leonardo all about this opinion which brews into a long standing fight between them. In the passing years, thirty from when Donatello disappears, the three brothers drift apart, sustain permanent injuries, for Raphael losing his right eye, and even lose Casey. During this time the Shredder takes over the world as well as enslaving the Utroms, working to spread his domination through the universe.
Raphael is one that stays away from others, contactable through some means. After Donatello appears in the future he heeds a call from April, arriving only to find Leonardo already there. Their age old argument begins and nearly turns into a fight when they are interrupted by a staff knocking each of them over. Raphael is stunned to see Donatello returned and after standing he enthusiastically gives him a hug, holding on for a few moments in a hug that goes beyond the affected dislike for such displays he would have shown before.
Though he expresses doubt about the ability to get to the Shredder much less face him he decides to trust Donatello and goes with him to face their long term enemy. They arrive in his chamber by using the turtle tunneler, where upon they engage the Karai Legion that protect him, and Karai herself. With Michelangelo and Leonardo, Raphael works to hold the forces off and give Donatello to get his plan to work. Unfortunately they are not able to defeat all of the Legion and a group of them take out Michelangelo. Leonardo faces Karai, demanding she make a decision once and for all, and in the end she does, cutting him down, though it seems to hurt her to have done so. Seeing his brother dead Raphael flies into a rage and attacks Karai, facing her for a bit until he too is mortally wounded. With the last of his strength he fights his way to his brother’s side, finally reaching him just as he dies, perhaps a last attempt to be a family. He does not know if the plan succeeded or not, dying before it’s completion.
Character Personality:
Out of the whole family Raphael is the most protective brother. He is quick to rush forward to his brother’s side in any situation where they are at risk; but he often follows the mind set of ‘only family can mess with family’ and makes no apologies for showing his brothers his rough side as well. This has become more subdued in the past three decades, out of necessity and because of the steady separation in the family. Even with this Raphael’s primary concern is for his family, even if how he goes about expressing it is a bit obtuse.
When he was younger Raphael was quick and easy to anger to the point of attacking another, even in a blind rage. Even then he recognized this was not a healthy way for him to be and considered it a ‘problem’. As he grew up and faced the immense events that he did he learned how to hold his temper a bit better, becoming more of the one to rile the other into action rather than the reverse. Still when it comes to his family he is quickly over run when they are put at risk, injured or killed. Raphael has also shown that with age and experience he has the ability to focus the intent and ferocity of his rage, using it as fuel when needed, rather than letting it inhibit him.
He is often the type of person who, while he is quick to point a finger, isn’t unaware of his own involvement. For example his largest argument with his brother Leonardo is that he feels they as a group could have gone back and saved their father; while he attributes the decision to Leonardo, he uses the we when talking about what they could have done as opposed to what they did. Even with this, he is also the first to extend his hand in at least truce if not peace to end the argument and fighting. It is not shown directly how he feels about their family falling apart but it is something that seems to weigh heavily on him when he starts accusing Leonardo.
While they were younger Raphael was as equally likely to wrestle, hit or rain down some other form of older brother punishment on Michelangelo as he was to participate in his brother’s shenanigans. In more recent years he has grown as equally as estranged from his younger brother as he has Leonardo, he is far enough removed from him that Michelangelo seems bitter when mentioning Raphael even, and Michelangelo is the brother he speaks to least in the episode. Before his disappearance Donatello was the brother that Raphael respected the most, while he never seemed overly close with him, Raphael didn’t go out of his way to antagonize him too often, and on the instances when he would it was normally because there was some smart-aleck remark or joke that was just waiting to be said, Donatello is also the brother he was the least physically aggressive with. With his return Raphael shows an extraordinary amount of affection for Donatello, going to far as to hug him without prompting and holding on for a few moments, rather than just a quick hug.
Raphael has been shown to care for kids and animals, a softer side of his character that is often overlooked for the prickly exterior he puts up. He also can be relaxed more often than not, only truly getting riled up when someone pushes his buttons, of which there are unfortunately many. While he is not one to make friends fast he often becomes a stalwart friend once the connection has been established. In this way his distance from his family and friends over the turbulent years has been rather eye opening for him. He is more open with his displays of affection with his family now as opposed to when he was younger.
Powers and Abilities:
Raphael is a mutant turtle with extra dexterity and flexibility in comparison to his turtle origins. He is also trained in various ninja skills, and has considerable skill with a variety of weapons, though his specialties are sai and hand to hand combat. Also he has a strong ability for technical application, use and activation of explosives of various types.

Hey... Raph here, I figger people would want to know my bros and I are safe. We know there’s probably been a lot a noise comin outta our place, and I’ll at least say sorry for myself, but please have some patience. We got a little mess we still gotta clean up ta make sure everything is all clear again.
I can’t give the smart version, but somethin went wrong in Donnie’s lab, and we’ve... been playing clean up crew in an extreme way. I won’t say no one’s hurt, but nothin that won’t heal up jus fine given a little time. But for right now, we ain’t taken visitors, so if ya got somethin ya need to tell us, send us a line. We’ll be checkin- [The is the sound of something somewhat wet roaring not far from where the recording device is.] What the SHELL? I thought I said to give me a few minutes, LEO!
Third Person:
Meditation, long ago Raph would have been grumbling about doing it, but now, now he understood why a lot better. It gave him some measure of inner peace, a quelling of the anger that, while more controlled, still sometimes threatened to overflow him, and it gave him the chance to reflect on his own actions and how he reacted to others.
At the moment he had found a secluded place in one of the forested areas, enjoying the nature, the quiet and the freedom. He sat with feet tucked under leg, arms loose in front of him and hands at his knees, palms up, his eye shut to focus himself within, rather than without.
Right now his thoughts were on how he was dealing with Mike. Finding his younger brother here, having been here awhile before him, had been surprising, but it had been good to know he was here, alive in a way, and most importantly doing well. But he felt the distance between them, and he couldn’t bring himself to feel mad at his brother for it. When they should have been together, as a family, Raph himself had worked a wedge between himself and Leo, pushing and shoving until there was no living together.
And he knew it, he had known it for a while, even before Donnie returned to them, but he couldn’t admit it. He couldn’t admit then that he had let himself destroy what their teacher, their master, their father had died to save. And now, he found himself afraid, afraid of being rejected, being turned away still. But Mike deserved to hear the apology, more than anyone Mike needed to be given the apology, so that maybe something could heal for him. That settled it, next time he saw his brother, he would say the words he hadn’t yet, he wouldn’t allow his fear to conquer him any longer.
Besides, he really wanted his brother back.
